Turning Old Perfume Into Air Freshener

recycling old perfumes 001 air freshener 001 air freshener 002

I have gone through 2 bottles of perfumes since June, but not as fragrances on myself.  I managed to use them up in the toilet as room sprays.  They were purchased at least 6 to 8 years back, and more than half have been used up.  I purposely chose the ones with the least leftover first as they would be used up faster.  With 2 bottles down, I have another 4 to 5 bottles to to go, before I will allow myself to get a brand new one.  And this time I will be sticking to just one bottle.

DIY Tea Tree Kitchen Grease Cutter

In a grease cutting mood today, because I just bought a simple-looking 150ml spray bottle.  The smaller bottle is handier, and I am hoping to make the chore of cutting kitchen grease looking/feeling more effortless.

… yup, anything that motivates me to clean.

I have been using vinegar as the main ingredient for a number of DIY household cleaning products; it’s cheap, effective, and toxic free.  First, dilute white vinegar with water.  The vinegar/water ratio will depend on the purpose of the diy cleaner, for kitchen grease, I use 1 part vinegar to 2 parts water.  Then, finish off with a favorite scent or two using essential oils.  Some essential oils have additional benefit of being antiseptic (note : different from anti-bacterial), though vinegar alone disinfects pretty well.  Finally, shake the mixture up a bit, and you are ready to go.

DIY TEA TREE KITCHEN GREASE CUTTER
ITEMS NEEDED :
- A Spray Bottle
- 1 Part White Vinegar
- 2 Parts Water
- 10 drops of Tea Tree Oil (for 150ml spray bottle)

INSTRUCTIONS :

01. Combine white vinegar and water in the spray bottle.
02. Add tea tree oil.
03. Close the spray bottle and shake to mix the ingredients well.

++ Notes to self ++
///

Shake the bottle for the content to mix well before using.
///
Spray on the surface to be cleaned, wait for a few seconds, before wiping off with a clean cloth.
///
Get translucent containers instead of clear ones as homemade cleaners tend to have a “foggy” or slight discoloration appearance depending on the ingredients used.  Reason is purely for aesthetic.  I prefer something that looks/feels clean to clean my house with.

Diy Citronella Oil ‘Reed’ Diffuser

diy reed diffuser // mono+codiy reed diffuser

This ‘Cang Mao Yew” is available at most local medical halls, and contains 20% citronella oil, making it a natural and very affordable mosquito repellent.  I have been pouring it into small saucers and placing them around the house where I want to repel mosquitoes.  It evaporates fast though, due to the presence of methol crystals, so I gotta top up the saucers almost every week.  I also drip (can’t pour, the dispenser is just a tiny hole) a lot into my oil burner, minus the flame*, for better aesthetics.

Talking about better aesthetics, I just diy-ed an existing new bottle to a ‘reed’ diffuser with origami paper and adhesive tapes from Daiso.  I flip the reed daily to refresh the diffusing process.

____________

/  *not to be used with a lighted candle, dangerous as it has a very low smoking point.

/  i used a wooden skewer with the pointed end snipped off, rattan would have been a better choice.

/  there are a few versions or brands of ‘Cang Mao Yew’, this made in Singapore brand happened to be one with the highest concentration of citronella oil on its ingredient list.  The rest of the ingredients : clove oil (25%), methol (25%), white oil (10%) and eucalyptus (20%).

Recycled Exercise Books

Half-used exercise books are standard fixtures at the end of the school term. It gets kind of messy with a few pages from the spelling test book, to an almost unused stack from the penmanship class. Instead of keeping these used exercise books as it is, I consolidated the unused sheets into 2 DIY bound journals, so that I can write on the the remaining unused pages.

After some tearing, sorting and hole-punching, I turned to my elementary book binding skills and created 2 journal books with the loose sheets.

This project can be easily completed in under 2 hours. Nothing fanciful here, these recycled exercise books are after all just recycled paper being bound. I did not use any glitzy craft paper or tapes. I just grabbed whatever that I could find inside my drawer. However, I still attempted a simple decoration trick with a 3.5″ diskette label, to make it look slightly “old-school”.

Things I used for this project:
– Scissors
– Hole puncher
– Linen thread & needle
– Cover paper
– Masking tape (Optional, for the book spine, if you do not want the stitches to show)

DIY Ikea Pello/Poang Chair Felt Cover

diy ikea pello cover // mono+co

Our trusty 10 year old Ikea Pello armchair badly needs a new cover, but the price (starts from $50 for the most basic fabric design) made it difficult for me to decide, when I see a brand new Pello costs only $69.

Since there was nothing really wrong with the frame structure, I decided to sew the cover myself.  I found some ready-cut felt cloth (70cm x 60cm) in gray (I used four) and a ball cotton lace yarn in matching color within the craft section of Daiso. Total bill came up to just $10.
Here’s my plan to put the 4 pieces of felt together.

I kept the original cushion + cover inside as stuffing.  I hand-sewn the entire thing with back stitch, did not take too long as there was no cutting, or detailed measuring required.  The dimension of the ready cut felt cloths fits wonderfully well, and the cover was still removable for washing (or replacing) in the future.

School Day Checklist

The week long school holiday was over in the wink of an eye.  To get the kids ready for the new term, we created a leave-home-checklist: a list of items that they need to bring to school, e.g. water bottle, pocket money, student pass etc.  Special items that are needed on certain days (like, art file on Tuesdays) are also jotted down.

It is useful for the morning rush hour, as the kids can get a bit disorganized on their way out to school.  Best part: they do the checking on their own, and are responsible for their own oversight should they forget anything.
