Desktop Wallpaper Calendar – Feb 2015

February’s wallpaper design deserves to be a bit more chirpy with Chinese New Year and Valentine’s Day.
I got the Valentine vector card free from here (Pepsized.com) created by Ewa Sajdak, and modify it to a desktop wallpaper.

Mine measures 1920×1080.

Hi, glad you found my site where I write mostly about my homemade bread recipes enriched with natural vegetables + other things I do daily to slow down a little and pare down a lot, especially on food waste and single-use plastics. Afterall, we only have one earth, let’s be nice to it.

I started looking into the volume of my household food scraps after I began a composting project. The home-composting bin is always too small, daily raw food scraps would quickly fill up the bin before they have enough time (about three months) to break down. To manage this issue of "oversupply", I started to reduce the volume of food scraps through cooking (soup stock to the rescue!) and trying to consume all parts of the produce, where possible. As seen here, now I learn to eat my apples with peels! The home-composting bin is somewhat similar to a mini landfill. If I am not mindful of the amount of trash I generate, it would fill up extremely fast. That's why I will be glad to support community garden composting sites, turn vegetable scraps into useful fertiliser instead of burning them to ashes to fill Pulau Semakau. We have until 2035 before we run out of space on our only landfill!

Not exactly a zero-waste action, but I look out for pantry items that double up as beauty products to reduce the clutter in my bathroom. I used to complain rarely-used-but-expired products piling up inside my drawers, nowadays I rarely stock up spare-anything. And should I run out of beauty suplies, I always have some pantry items as back up. Like raw honey to replace drugstore facial clay mask. Leave it on face for 15-30 minutes, and rinse clean.

CERAMIC BAKEWARE for baking cupcakes and brownies without paper liner// A 30-minute soak in water generally helps to remove burnt/ baked on food easily. Otherwise, hot water, baking soda, vinegar, scrubbing brush are always great back up solutions for tougher stains.

Here's how I fold old newspapers into a trash bin liner, step-by-step photos. When the bin is full, wrap trash and fasten with rubber band before discarding them at a public bin. I discard mine at my block's lift landing lobby. This version of trash bag cannot be thrown down the rubbish chute, I don't mind walking a bit further to throw my trash anyway.

STAINLESS STEEL CLOTHES PEGS // Not asking everyone to throw away all your plastic pegs and make the big switch to metallic ones. I only buy to replace the broken ones as they disintegrate over time and break. However, hubby still prefers his plastic pegs, he says my metal ones cause snag in his shirt. I am compromising because it can happen when not careful, so a small number of plastic pegs maintain for delicate pieces. Still lesser broken plastic waste created from laundry room. Metal clothes pegs are bought from #neighbourhoodhardwareshop, since 2016. My first worry was rust, but nope, they didn't even tarnish a bit. #ecohoodshops

DIY MOSQUITO REPELLENT// My homemade solution to replace store-bought repellent patches and sprays for bug bite-free outings. Simply combine 20-30 drops of citronella essential oil and water in a 30ml spray bottle, shake well to mix before every use. For a longer-lasting or stronger version, I mix citronella with jojoba or avocado oil instead of water. In this case, don't use spray bottle, make the smallest batch based on how much you need, store the oil mixture in the smallest bottle you have at home. The oil will turn rancid if store aside for too long, make as per needed. A 30ml bottle of citronella essential lasts really long. It's been almost three years since I DIY my mozzie repellent, and I have not even used half of it yet. How much money/repellent patch waste/plastic spray bottles I have saved! Guilty: The mosquito patches on left was an impulse buy by a Gudetama-fan at home. They are so cute, after losing their effectiveness, we salvage them to be #reuse as plant pot embellishments after they have lost their effectiveness. #whythrow ? Always back up with #zerowaste solutions!

PAPER BIN LINER// Like most, it was at first unimaginable to live without plastic bags as trash bags. Then I made the level of household waste go low, it went really low as most were directed to the recycling bin and the rest were curbed at source. Fast forward to 2019, I am also reducing my level of recyclables as well. What's left now is small pile of wet kitchen waste and some unavoidable dry trash. Here is how I line my dry trash bin: with old newspaper. If you are not a Sph subscriber, find a neighbour who's one and request nicely if they can spare you a regular supply. I am sure they would gladly do so, I know because I am supplying old newspapers to four households on my floor to avoid old papers from piling up at home.

A SMALLER WASTE BIN now sits inside my kitchen sink, replacing a larger waste bin previously placed on the floor. I also line my bin with the unavoidable product packaging instead of shopping bags.
